Volunteering at United Hospital Center

United Hospital Center has two organizations that actively seek volunteers interested in supporting the mission of UHC. Volunteer opportunities exist with both the Auxiliary to United Hospital Center and People’s Hospice for those interested in providing volunteer services to individuals served by UHC and supporting the special events and projects of the hospital.

Auxiliary to United Hospital Center

Auxiliary to WV Hospital Association Volunteer of the Year 9/2011 - 8/2012: Sandy Mossor

Sandy Mossor began volunteering in June of 2001 and has amassed 19,570 hours of volunteer service as of June 30, 2011.  She is very dedicated and has continued to volunteer many times per week and even when a substitute is needed.  Sandy began volunteering at the information desk but quickly got interested in our Gift Shop.  She moved to the Gift Shop and filled several shifts, enabling the Gift Shop to be open more hours.  Sandy is a real people person too and developed relationships with the people and employees that shop.  She has taken over the intensive work of scheduling the volunteers in the gift shop and does an excellent job.  Sandy also places orders for several categories of inventory for the shop.  She was even renamed; everyone lovingly calls her "Gift-Shop-Sandy"!

She has again added the information desk to her schedule where she volunteers regularly and as a substitute when needed.  She is serving her second term on the Auxiliary Board of Directors as Treasurer and contributes new and fresh ideas to our board.

Sandy is an active member of her church and lives her life accordingly.

Patient Visitation:

Volunteers visit designated patients who may need someone to talk to or a little cheering up.

Information Desk:

Information desk volunteers answer questions visitors and callers have about the location of patients and hospital services. They also sort patient mail. Good phone and computer skills are needed for this job.

Volunteers transport patients being admitted or discharged from the hospital. They also deliver patient mail and run errands for the Admissions Department staff.

Book Cart:

Volunteers distribute books and magazines to patients.

Central Registration:

Volunteers greet patients who come for testing or to be admitted. They also begin the registration process for patients.

Gift Shop:

Volunteers work in this retail environment as cashier, stocking, selling and ordering supplies. The proceeds from the Gift Shop are used to purchase needed equipment for the hospital.

Volunteers in this area work with the elderly and those recovering from surgery. Have fun calling Bingo or helping with a seasonal party.

Golden Spoons:

Volunteers help patients who need assistance with meals. Services include passing out trays, helping cut food, and feeding. Training provided.

People's Hospice Volunteers

Give a few hours each week to People's Hospice and see just how much you gain from helping others. You'll help patients, their families, visitors or the hospice staff. You might work closely with the patients and their families by providing companionship, love and understanding or you might help with the clerical work at the office, work on special projects, help with fund raising, the speakers' bureau or assist with the bereavement program. Call today and become one of our much-needed volunteers.
