Peak PlasmaBlade Exclusive in the Region to UHC

Is your child up frequently during the night?  Are you as an adult experiencing discomfort swallowing?  Does it seem like your child often experiences a fever causing them to miss out on activities.  Do you have bad breath due to Tonsil stones?

United Hospital Center ENT's K. Scott Oxley, M.D. and Daniel J. Merenda, M.D., are now using the latest PEAK Surgery System to remove tonsils in young children and adults.  The PEAK PlasmaBlade, which is unique in the region to UHC, is a pioneering cutting and coagulation tool for removing excess tonsil tissue with the precision of a scalpel and haemostatic of traditional electrosurgery, without all of the collateral thermal damage. 

Most often children, but sometimes adults, can experience Persistent Tonsillitis, which is a sore throat, pain or discomfort when swallowing; fever, tonsil stones or swollen glands in the neck are also common symptoms.  Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is not only seen in adults, but also in children, who sometimes experience snoring, pauses in breathing, snorts and gasps during sleep.

Recent guidelines have changed as far as which patients would benefit most from having their tonsils removed.  A tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children ages 4 to 15.   For those patients who would benefit from this surgery, such as children experiencing interrupted sleep, this surgical option can quickly get them back to normal life. 

The best solution for both of these conditions may be removal of the tonsils.  The new technology can help reduce pain, smaller incision size, lessen tissue damage and shorten recovery times.  All important factors to an adult or child who needs to get back to their normal way of living.

"It is an excellent product," said Daniel Merenda, M.D.  "All of the patients I have seen have done very well with decreased postoperative pain."

For decades, surgeons have relied on scalpels to cut skin and delicate tissues and used electrosurgical devices to cut and coagulate fat and other thicker, tougher tissues. Although scalpels precisely cut tissue, they do not control bleeding. Electrosurgical devices, on the other hand, cut efficiently and control bleeding but can cause extensive thermal damage to surrounding tissue.

In cases where the risk of collateral damage or scarring from electrosurgery is considered to be unacceptable, surgeons must use both a traditional scalpel for cutting and an electrosurgery device for coagulation. The PlasmaBlade offers the precision of a scalpel and the bleeding control of a traditional electrosurgery device in a single surgical tool.

"I have evaluated the Peak equipment for a tonsillectomy.  Personally, I have completed more than ten cases.  I have found that the patients have not had as much pain in the recovery period," said Scott Oxley, PharmD., M.D.  "There have been fewer calls to the office regarding post-op questions as well.  Several parents have noted their children have felt better or more like themselves within three days, which is an improvement."

Unlike most radiofrequency-based surgical products that use continuous voltage waveforms to cut tissue, the PULSAR Generator supplies pulsed plasma-mediated electrical discharges through the PlasmaBlade. Because the radiofrequency is provided in short on-and-off pulses and the blade contains a highly insulated cutting electrode, the PlasmaBlade cuts tissue at an average temperature that is half that of a conventional electrosurgery device and can be as low as 50 degrees Centigrade. This temperature reduction results in reduced heat transfer and significantly less damage to surrounding tissues compared with traditional electrosurgical devices. The PlasmaBlade also can dissect tissue in a wet or dry surgical field.

PEAK Surgical has initiated a series of clinical studies, called the PRECISE Studies, to examine the use of the PlasmaBlade in orthopedic, plastic and reconstructive, ENT and oncologic surgery. Initial study results have been presented at various medical congresses, including American College of Surgeons (ACS) and American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS). These study results have demonstrated that the PlasmaBlade was associated with significant improvements in the following endpoints as compared with the standard of care:

  • 75 percent reduction in thermal injury
  • 31 percent reduction in inflammation
  • 49 percent reduction in post-operative narcotic consumption
  • 65 and 42 percent stronger healed incision strength at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively
